What is the title of your upcoming CD? How did you come up with the name?
DAUZAT ST. MARIE
Heather: The CD is titled “Falling Again.” It took its name from one of the first songs Mat and I wrote together as Dauzat St. Marie, and the title track of the EP “Falling Again.”

Did you write all the songs before going into the studio or did you write them as you were recording?
DAUZAT ST. MARIE
Mat: With our rock band Hydrovibe, Heather and I not only write the songs beforehand, we make it a policy to road test the material before taking it to the studio when possible. Things have a way of honing themselves on the road much better than could be achieved in the studio. Such was the case with this Dauzat St. Marie EP. We wrote the songs and road tested them on a couple of tours before hitting the studio. That being said, there is always SOME amount of writing that inevitably happens in the studio. You are in a creative environment, so inspiration often rears its head and leads to new and exciting changes to the songs.

Walk us thru the process of writing your music?
DAUZAT ST. MARIE
Mat: Our process has always been all over the place. It really seems to change from song to song. Sometimes it’ll begin with a concept or a lyrical idea, and we follow that path. Sometimes it starts with a musical idea, and the concept reveals itself later. Sometimes a hummed vocal melody idea sparks the fire, and the music and lyrics come later. Sometimes it is simply sparked by a cool guitar riff, and we go from there. Some songs have literally been written in 30 minutes and some get kicked around for years. We never ever force anything; we actually seem to do our best work when we kinda stay out of the way and let the song dictate itself.

Where did you record and why?
DAUZAT ST. MARIE
Heather: Mat actually has a recording studio facility in North Hollywood, so of course Dauzat St. Marie gets the hook up! He is a busy guy producing and writing for other artists, so we did have to sneak in studio time when he was not on the clock with other artists. I think he was juggling work producing an album and an EP with 2 other artists while we were doing the bulk of our recording, so we typically would begin work around midnight when he wrapped work with his other artists.

How did you pay for your recording?
DAUZAT ST. MARIE
Heather: We certainly benefit heavily from the fact that Mat is a music producer by trade! That essentially eliminates studio time and producer/engineer fees from the equation. That’s not to say that there wasn’t significant cost involved when you consider studio expenses, gear wear & tear, mastering, manufacturing, etc. We proudly pay for everything out of our own pockets. With self-sufficiency comes great freedom!

Did you have a producer or did you self-produce? If so, what kind of input did the producer have. If your self-produced, why?
DAUZAT ST. MARIE
Heather: Another benefit of having a music producer as a bandmate! Mat produced the EP, but brought in legendary music producer (and dear friend) Ryan Greene to assist along the way. It is always a good idea to get some outside perspective from a highly credible source. Ryan also mixed the EP for us as well.

Did you try to capture your "live sound" or did you go for something else?
DAUZAT ST. MARIE
Mat: I did try to capture the “live sound” as much as possible, but I embellished beyond with further production. Producing this EP was quite a challenging task to be honest. There was no established recorded sound for Dauzat St. Marie, leaving a completely blank canvas. With no established sonic template, a lot of discretion was necessary in discovering the limit of how much embellishment to the “live sound” was appropriate. I have every tool imaginable at my disposal to make HUGE productions of these songs, but I leaned much more toward an honest presentation. We’re definitely sensitive to the issue. For example, the song “Falling Again” troubled me because it was written as a piano song and appears on the EP as such. Though I played that piano part in the studio, I have no interest in playing piano live. It concerned me that we’d be merely translating a piano song to guitar for the live show, so we decided instead to give “Falling Again” its own acoustic guitar treatment and include that on this EP as well. I’m glad we did - the acoustic version took on a life of its own and is equally as powerful in a very different way.

Did your record label have any input into the music you recorded?
DAUZAT ST. MARIE
Mat: YES! Heather and I are both partners in Orleans Street Records, LLC, which was established in 2006 to be the conduit for all our artistic endeavors. We are the label AND the artist.

Are you pleased with the final product?

Will you be touring to promote your CD?
DAUZAT ST. MARIE
Mat: YES! We will be launching back out on tour in March.

ATP
Would rather be recording or playing live shows?
DAUZAT ST. MARIE
Heather: I like them both for different reasons. They both present challenges. I guess I’d lean more toward live shows because I really feed off that crowd interaction.
Mat: My viewpoint may be skewed because I spend most of my time recording in a studio for a living, but I’d say LIVE SHOWS! Of course, at the end of a very long tour my vote could sway toward recording again!

Anything you would like to say to your fans?
DAUZAT ST. MARIE
Heather: We take any opportunity we can to thank all the wonderful people who have been so supportive of us over the years. When we launched Dauzat St. Marie, we were slightly concerned about how all the fans of our rock band Hydrovibe would react to this new sound… and we’ve been pleasantly surprised at how everyone is completely embracing what we are doing. The support has been overwhelming and humbling. Thank you all. Can’t wait to see you at a show soon!
