Chainsaw Abortion are a force of brutality to be reckoned with. We had to
chance to speak with Justin. He's spoken to us before about his other band
Unburied but we wanted to know more about his side project, Chainsaw
Abortion.
Arm The Pit
For the record, what is your band's name? How did you come up with that
name?
Justin Tombed
The project was named Chainsaw Abortion because I wanted to pick the sickest
name for a band. With in terms of death metal is hard to do. (Laughs)
ATP
So who's in the band and what's everyone's life story in 50 words or less?
JT
Dreathus Harris from Unburied/Inexorable is on lead guitar. I take care of
everything else with Chainsaw Abortion. It's basically a recording project
and a chance to do something outside of Unburied. As far as our life
stories. We are the people you see next to you at every metal show.
ATP
In a nutshell, please describe your sound.
JT
Brutal, Chaotic, Disharmonic and Machinelike. I wanted to make something
with layers of sound all going different directions at times, then syncing
up then next. I call it the ultimate experience in lo fi cult brutal death
metal. As a pun on The Evil Dead.
ATP
Why did you each of you start playing music and was there a turning point from
becoming the dream child that every mother and father hopes their child
will become before discovering music? Why did music become a career choice
for you?
JT
Both Dreathus and I grew up in clubs playing shows. All thoughout our teens
we gigged locally. I think it provided a much needed vent for agression.
Otherwise, I'd be on a rofftop with an AK-47. (Laughs)
ATP
What bands have influenced each of you?
JT
I personally dig the classic death metal bands. Morbid Angel, Deicide,
Cannibal Corpse, Death, Obitary, etc Those are my favorites. I'm also a huge
fan of thrash. Dreathus is currently taking in all the black metal that he
can. Shit, I used to be the black metal freak in Unburied and Dreathus was
more a death metal guy. Now we've seemed to trade places. I guess it's good
that we learn from one another.
ATP
What makes your band unique?
JT
You won't find any other project like Chainsaw Abortion anywhere. That was
the thing to make it it stand out from everything else that been done. It
has parts of Mortican, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Slayer, Old Metallica,
Meshuggah, The Berzerker and Children of Bodom. But its different from all
those at the same time.
ATP
If you could hang with anyone, who would it be?
JT
Right now. It would be Sam Raimi. The director who made The Evil Dead, Evil
Dead 2: Dead By Dawn and Army of Darkness. The only reason is because my
bassist, Joe Moiser and I are planning on shooting a horror movie entitled
"Beneath The Soil" go to
www.myspace.com/asylumfilms for more info.
ATP
What instruments do you each play? How did you learn to play, self or school?
JT
I'm a jack of trade at many instruments. But I'm only a master at one.
vocals. I've actually played guitar longer than I've sang. But, sing came
naturally to me. I'm a self taught vocalist. On guitar I went to Scotty's
Music (Overland, MO) and learn from a country guitarist named, Bob. He was a
man in his 60's who could play the Slayer tabs I bought in twice as fast. It
was insane.
ATP
Do you write your own music? Who writes the music?
JT
I write all the music for this project. Dreathus write all his own solos
around what I've laid down so far.
ATP
What inspires the songs you write?
JT
Chainsaw Abortion was going to be this full out gore laden subject matter.
But I did a lot of that in Unburied with the last CD. So I focused on my
favorite target...Christianity.
ATP
How long does it take you to write a song that’s ready to record?
JT
Can write a song in a few hours. But programming the drums that's another
matter. Good thing there is Red Bull.
ATP
Do you do any recording on your own?
JT
Yes. All of it so I can learn from it.
ATP
How would you describe your local music scene? Likes, Dislikes.
JT
Blah. There are a lot of new bands who are heavy. That is one of my likes.
But at the same time there are a lot of bands who are that new death
metal-hardcore hybrid which does nothing for me.
ATP
What would you like to change about your local music scene?
JT
I'd like the venues to be more respectful of bands. It would also be nice if
"some" could be more organized in their promotional efforts.
ATP
What is your favorite local venue?
JT
Just Bill's in Overland,MO hands down. Go to
www.chunksofmeat.com to find out
more. Any touring bands looking to book shows contact Lee Skyles and tell
him Justin from Unburied sent you.
ATP
What's the biggest problem you find when working with other bands, booking
agents, promoters and venues when setting up a show or a tour?
JT
Some bands don't confirm dates. Some venues don't respond to emails/call
fast enough. Some bands don't know how to show up at their own shows. But I
guess everyone has problems.
ATP
How experienced are you on the stage? A virgin or whore.
JT
I'm a filthy crack whore when it come to stage experience. It's like a
second home.
ATP
How do you transport your equipment to the gig? Mom's car or a battle
weary van. Do you have name for it?
JT
Chainsaw Abortion doesn't play shows at the moment. It is currently a
recording project only. Due to the fact that Unburied is my No. 1 priority.
ATP
Most people will never know what it feels like to be on stage in front of
a crowd, explain that feeling:
JT
You know that feeling you get after sex? Or after a fistfight? That pumped
up but relieved feeling. It's like that. Sometimes at really good shows you
feel like your god. It's a head-trip.
ATP
Describe your typical stage show performance. Give us a hint into what we
might expect at your show and why we should go.
JT
If Chainsaw Abortion plays live it will be limited and based around
Unburied. But when we do we I'll be playing bass, vocals, and running the
drum machine and Dreathus will be playing rhythm/lead guitar. There will
also be likes of fake gore. And since everyone will have to wait I promise I
will get pig heads and a bag of guts as decor. We'd have to rent a VFW hall
and maybe get some permits.
ATP
Tell us about your most memorable gig and why it was so great.
JT
None so far with Chainsaw Abortion. With Unburied every time we play it just
gets better and better.
ATP
Tell us about your worst gig and why it was so bad.
JT
Again, none with Chainsaw Abortion. But Unburied was this time that my
drummer and I got shitfaced on Jack Daniels.
ATP
Do you believe commercial/mainstream music has had a negative effect on
new music? Why or Why Not.
JT
I can't even stand Headbanger Ball so what does that tell ya? Fuck the
mainstream trendy sissy foo foo bullshit.
ATP
How do we take back music from the suits?
JT
D.I.Y. Do It Yourself. You can record your own CD, book your own shows, hook
up your own interviews, get reviews, make music videos, make merch, etc all
by yourself. It my not be "top professional quality" but you'll learn more
and have more pride at the end of the day.
ATP
How big of an impact do you think the underground, indie scene has
on the current pop culture?
JT
Metalocalypse is an example. They have all kinds of underground metal
references. like Burzum's and Dimmu Burger.
ATP
Do you feel that "underground" is just a marketing term like
anything else?
JT
No, it is real. Just look around this site a bit. Go to myspace, pure
volume, etc It is there and thank Satan for those who support it.
ATP
Has the internet really been helpful to your promotion? Why or Why
Not.
JT
It's the only promotion we have. It's free promo. You can't beat that.
ATP
Can you name a few of you favorite places on the web for band
promotions?
JT
Myspace has become a demon for band promo. I just hope it doesn't suffer the
same fate a mp3.com did.
It's a myspace page. So download some shit from it and add us.
ATP
Do you have a street team? How do you join your street team?
JT
Nope, word of mouth only. The old school way.
ATP
Would you open for a headlining act? Who would it be and why?
JT
Mortican. Just because they are kings of brutal death.
ATP
Where's your dream gig?
JT
Pig Heads. Anywhere that we can have pig heads. (Laughs)
ATP
Are there any established artists with whom you would like to
play with?
JT
Deicide, Cryptopsy, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Slayer, Meshuggah, The Berzerker
or Children of Bodom
ATP
Are you looking to get a record deal? Why or Why Not?
JT
Fuck a record deal. Chainsaw Abortion is brutal chaotic death. It isn't even
"listenable" by mainstream standards.
ATP
Let us say that you have been just signed by a major label and
they say time to move 2500 miles. Now what, would you be able to move?
JT
Record labels...BAD. Beer...GOOD.
ATP
What are your plans for the future? In a year, 5 years.
JT
Focusing on Unburied. Starting up Aslum Recording, Rites of Passage Tattoos
and Asylum Productions. Also making a horror movie and putting out a
Unburied DVD. Milwaukee Metalfest is also currently in the works for
Unburied. So Chainsaw Abortion is one pause currently.
ATP
Finally, do have any words on what Arm The Pit means to you?
JT
I honestly can't say enough about armthepit.com You guys support the hell
out of underground, independent and indie bands. Giving us a platform to
keep people informed. You guys also are constantly coming up with ways for
bands to promote themselves. So two big fucking devil horns to Arm The Pit.
Stay Brutal!!!!
ATP
Justin thanks again. Best of luck on all your projects and here's to keeping
it brutal.
